Tuesday, August 10, 2004 Mixed Feelings If you're reading this on the real site, there's new links over to the left. One is to the live journal mirror, the other to my live journal friends page. People make it or not on to that page for purely random reasons. Primarily me noticing they have a live journal account and thinking to add them. I'm still unconvinced about live journal. The interface is incredibly clunky. There seem to be too many people who don't read other people's blogs unless they are on live journal (hence the mirror) or who get upset if someone doesn't "friend" them back or... I could go on. There's also far too many live journal specific quizzes(*) that require people to register with yet another site before they'll work. As if enough people don't have my e-mail address already. But the biggest problem is the silly user names. (Like "Buserian"...) So there's this person, sex unspecified, called "wurblebunny". Do I know this person? Should I care about his(?) posts? Having a blog but no means for people who know you to identify it as you seems, well, odd. On the whole, anything that allows people to communicate is a good thing, so in general I guess I approve of live journal. I just wish it didn't annoy me quite so often. (*) Yes "quiz" not "meme". Every time I see these things described as "memes" I'm reminded of the Princess Bride. "I don't think this word means what you think it means." Okay, a lot of them aren't quizzes either, but none of them are memes. Arguably, some might act as a conduit for memes, but that's entirely different. The fact these things are referred to as memes is, however, a meme... Okay, I just like typing meme.
